January is Crime Stoppers Month

The concept was originally designed as a promotional effort in Albuquerque, New Mexico and the idea of Crime Stoppers Month was officially adopted at the annual Crime Stoppers International conference in Edmonton in September 1986. Since then programs around the world have been encouraged to mark January as Crime Stoppers Month.

Crime Stoppers Month is officially launched in each community early in January and programs also host a number of other events through the month as part of the celebration. January was picked for Crime Stoppers Month because no other organizations at that time had selected the month for special recognition. Many established charities, such as the Heart and Stroke Foundation, the Cancer Society and others had designated other months, but January was available. Since that time numerous other groups have picked months to highlight their worthwhile efforts and several chose the same month that Crime Stoppers selected in 1986.

Crime Stoppers Month has been officially recognized by the President of the United States, the Prime Minister of Canada, numerous state government leaders and provincial premiers, the United States Department of Justice, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police as well as countless other law enforcement agencies. Most programs get proclamations from the mayor or regional governor and letters of support from the police chief or other top law enforcement leaders. The media also help promote Crime Stoppers during January by publicizing events and carrying stories on the success of the program.
