The Role of Law Enforcement
and the Coordinator.

Law enforcement plays a critical role in the success of Crime Stoppers. Crime Stoppers exists to help law enforcement solve crimes.

It is the role of Law Enforcement to provide a police coordinator in the event the particular Crime Stoppers program does not employ a civilian coordinator.

Duties of the Crime Stoppers Coordinator:

  • Answer the Crime Stoppers program tips line telephone and receive tips from callers.

  • Screen the calls, verify the callers information and pass the tips on to the appropriate law enforcement agency.

  • Coordinate with investigators to determine the status of their investigation and if additional information is needed from callers.

  • Keep the Crime Stoppers Tips file updated and accurate.

  • Maintain statistics for program (Number of Calls, Cases Solved, Stolen property recovered, Narcotics Seized, and Assets Forfeited).

  • Recommend to the Board the cases to publicized as "Crime of the Week".

  • Work with the local media to ensure that the "Crime of the Week" is publicized and the information is accurate.

  • Appear with members of the Crime Stoppers Board of Directors at public speaking functions.

  • Promote the Crime Stoppers program within the law enforcement agency.

  • Carry out the general policies and goals of the Crime Stoppers Board.

  • Defer conflicts between Crime Stoppers Board and Law Enforcement Agency to the Crime Stoppers Board.

  • Meet at least monthly with the Crime Stoppers board of Directors. Present a comprehensive Coordinator's Report at the board meeting which will include information on solved cases so the board members can determine how much of a reward a caller should receive.

  • Coordinate with callers to ensure they will be paid. The Coordinator should NEVER meet with the Caller or make the payment to the Caller .
